The Feasibility of Peanut Shells and Coconut Pulp in Making a Pinboard

The Feasibility of Peanut Shells and Coconut Pulp in Making a Pinboard

ABSTRACT

Pinboards are often made of a material such as cork to facilitate addition and removal of messages or it can be placed on the computer so people can leave and erase messages for other people to read and see.Pinboards are very useful to people especially students and to office workers.

The researcher aims to produce a pinboard out of peanut shells and coconut pulp. And this raw materials are easy to find in the surroundings.

There are three process in making the product. First, is the preparation of the materials.Next is the making of the product and lastly is the testing of the product.

The data and the observation gathered state that the pinboard is easily contaminated with aging cause of the coconut pulp. So, the researcher conclude that the product made is feasible.

Chapter 1: Introduction
A. Background of the study
The researcher lead to this kind of study in able to produce a pinboard out from peanut shells and coconut pulp. The peanut or groundnut(arachis hypogaea), is a species in the legume family fabacaeae native to South America, Mexico and Central America. Today, peanuts are one of the leading food crops produced in the world. Most peanuts are separated from the shells or hulls to processing into value added products. . The shell of a peanut is biodegradable, absorbent and consists of a fibrous skeleton which supports a cellulosic layer.

Coconuts is the most popular and best known of all the valuable oil-bearing plants, but although so well known, it is only quite recently that its value in making butter and other edible fats was discovered. Coconut pulp usually just thrown after squeezing the milk of a coconut pulp so the researcher thinks that it is better to use it and pair it to peanut shells to make a pinboard.

B. Statement of the problem
This research study is focusing on making a pinboard using peanut shells and coconut pulp. It aims to answer the following questions:
1. Is there a significant difference between the commercial one and the alternative one?
2. Is it the same to the commercial in terms of color, odor, texture, and hardness?
C. Hypothesis
1. There is no significant difference between the commercial and the alternative one.
2. It will be the same to the commercial one in terms of its color, odor, texture, and hardness.
E. Definition of Terms
Peanut shell – the hulls or the outer covering of a peanut Coconut pulp – the wastes after the milk of the coconut has been removed; the raw material used by the researcher
Pinboard – a board that is being used by the people where they put their important notes,
pictures,etc.
Chapter 2: Review of Related Literature
Peanuts are one of the leading food crops produced in the world and there are billion pounds were produced. Most peanuts are separated from the shells or hulls to processing into value added products. The shell of a peanut is biodegradable, absorbent and consists of a fibrous skeleton which supports a cellulosic layer. The shells which are biodegradable and absorbent can be utilized as animal food filler, absorbents or carriers for pesticides or fertilizers although they are often landfilled. Peanut shells are put to use in the manufacture of plastic, wallboard, abrasives and fuel. It also used to make cellulose( used in rayon and paper) and mucilage.
Coconut is native to tropical eastern regions, but today it is also grown in the tropical parts of the United States, Central and South America, and Africa. Coconuts are both main source of income for many producing countries, and a source of many important products used in industrilized world. Coconut pulp or coconut jelly is inside in a coconut with the coconut water. Coconut meat is the thick white, fleshy substance found inside the coconut shell. It is edible and can be used fresh or dried in cooking. It can also be used to obtain coco flour, desiccated coconut, coconut milk, bukayo or local sweetened shredded coconut meat, etc.
Pinboards are often used by the people. It is where they put or place their notes, pictures, events, etc. The function of a pinboard is that they provide the ability to capture actual meeting results. All of the information written on the paper sheets and everything stuck on to it can be kept to document, the thought process and the results.
Chapter 3: Methodology
A. Preparation of the materials
The researcher prepares 20 g of pound or cut peanut shells, 20 g of dried coconut pulp, 50 ml of water, scissors, molder, beaker and the adhesive which is the zoy.

B. Making of the product
First, pound or cut the dry peanut shells and gather the dried coconut pulp. Then, put them together on a bowl and mixed. After that, put the zoy on the mixture and mix. After mixing, put the product on a molder and leave it in an undisturbed place where there is a presence of sunlight.

C.Testing of the product
To test the product, the researcher will prepare tables for the panelists for them to test and rate.

D. Observation
The researcher will then observe the product by its color, odor, texture and its hardness. Then researcher will compare it to the commercial one.

Chapter 4: Results and Discussion
This chapter shows the result collected and observed by the researcher. The result was shown in a tabular form.
In Trial 1, the researcher observed that the product has molds on the top. It is because the product has received incontinuous heat of the sun. The researcher found out that the smell of the coconut pulp has rendered in the product. The product is also soft and not so hard so it's easily breaks.

In Trial 2, the product has no more molds on the top because it receives continuous heat of the sun. But it also smells like coconut. The researcher used small amount of water and larger amount of the adhesive so the pinboard in second trial is harder than the first.

In Trial 3, the pinboard is harder and not easily to break. The color of the product is just like the ordinary pinboard. Its texture is kinda of rough but not as rough like the others.
